Park(ing) Day

The Drawing Room presents Edmonton’s first annual Park(ing) Day!

Artists, designers and engaged citizens will transform ten parking stalls along 101A avenue and 97 street into temporary art installations, urban interventions and performance spaces.

The Drawing Room put out a call to urbanists, dancers, visual artists, musicians, graffiti writers, filmmakers and anything in between to submit a proposal for a temporary installation using the City of Edmonton parking stalls outside our future home at 10137 97 Street. We asked, What would you do if you owned a parking stall for a day?

These incredible people responded to the call with an amazing array of weird and wonderful ideas: Andrew Buszchak, Kasie Campbell, Kelta Coomber, City of Edmonton, Haylee Fortin, Émilienne Gervais, Megan Gnanasihamany, Sydney Gross, Kristen Hiemstra, Knitmonton, Gene Kosowan, Jeanette Lazar, Evelyn Liesner, Alex Linfield, Morgan Melenka, Anna Miklas, Erica Morton, Badieh Mozayan, Brad Necyk, Jesse Northey, Claire Otto, Emmanuel Osahor, Jane Purvis, Stephen Sereda, Spacing Edmonton, and Marie Winters

Working within the parameters of an 8 by 24 foot parking stall, participants are challenged to engage viewers by critically commenting on the significance of public space. Artistic concepts include the built environment, community, advertising, car culture, environmental issues, gender, and technology as it relates to the city. Park(ing) Day will highlight the versatility of public spaces, as well as showcase a broad range of creative disciplines. This event benefits the community by promoting public engagement and civic responsibility. Raising awareness of the Quarters Downtown as a destination for arts and culture, Park(ing) Day will encourage people to see the city differently. Although temporary, Park(ing) Day alters the urban landscape and inspires direct participation in public space.

Park(ing) Day is an annual worldwide event where people transform metered parking spots into temporary public places.

A few things happening at Park(ing) Day at The Drawing Room this year are: Interactive Sculpture • Mini Golf • Urbanist Tea Party • Croquet Tournament • Dusty Pedals Bike Clinic • Knitting Circle • Performance and Sound Art • Concrete poetry and more!

Help us reclaim the city and engage the community!
